Research Programme for Telecommunication Applications (RPTA)
In the RPTA programme the focus is on the development of 3G and 4G services that
support the end user in his home and work environment. This programme focuses
specifically on the development of:
- applications for, for instance, healthcare and emergency services;
- context-aware services, at home, at work and in so-called hot spots;
- generic services and platforms for 3G-4G applications, which accelerate the
development of services and contribute to a large variety of user-friendly
services.
Six projects realise the Research Programme for Telecommunication Applications:
At present, users of information and communication services cannot move freely
between existing fixed and wireless telephony, data and cable networks and
automatically take their session and information with them. In the future multi-
service, layered network structure, applications (services), intelligence
(service control) and connectivity (network) are separated. For this purpose the
4G+ projects is developing a service control layer that will ensure that the
service is adapted to, and personal preferences are included in, a new user
context.
Environment-aware or context-aware services utilise the user's environment
information in order to serve him better. This concerns, for instance, spatial
information such as location and direction of travel; temporal information such
as date and time; or physiological information such as cardiac rhythm and blood
pressure. These types of services can increase the efficiency and quality of all
types of social processes. The B4U project investigates which demands users
place on this type of service and how providers can best realise and operate
these services.
The SPEARS project aims to develop a Personal Area Services architecture, which
allows the user to have access to his required services in any situation. With
the aid of intelligent terminals, which support data-based services in addition
to voice, an efficient connection is established between wireless ad-hoc
Personal Area Networks, based on WLAN or Bluetooth, and mobile Wide Area
Networks, such as GPRS and UMTS. In order to demonstrate the SPEARS concept, the
project will focus on improving the communication between rescue workers in
emergency situations.
Chronically disabled persons often deal with different care providers: GP,
specialist, physiotherapist, home carer etc. These care providers are mostly
based in different locations or visit the patient at home. The TELECARE project
aims to improve the communication and information exchange between the different
care providers by means of integrated fixed and mobile ICT applications. Such
applications allow the care provider to view patient files, request (multimedia-
based) information or consult with other care providers via a video link, in any
location.
Application developers are desperate for solutions, which they can use to offer
and use mobile services via the Internet, in one standardised manner. The
application environment that the WASP project will be realising will make it
easier for providers of mobile services to offer and manage their services,
while searching, finding and purchasing these services becomes easier for the
users. In addition, through the use of web services, these services will be able
to utilise the intelligence of the mobile network, something that is not easy at
present.
The various pieces of equipment, applications and services that we use in and
around the home for obtaining, viewing, processing, storing and sending
multimedia content, do not – or hardly – work together. For a lot of content,
like films or web pages, specific solutions such as the television or PC must be
used. The Xhome project aims to develop a generic, user-focused concept for a
quick and problem-free exchange of multimedia content, including 'content
searching' (searching and browsing), storage and distribution.
