A broadband vision for the Netherlands
The Freeband Kennisimpuls (Knowledge Impulse) research programme is a direct
follow-up to the report entitled "Freeband: a broadband vision for the
Netherlands". This joint publication by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the
Delft Technical University, The Eindhoven Technical University, the University
of Twente, the Telematica Instituut (Telematica Institute) and Stratix
Consulting Group established the foundation for a national vision and ambition
with regard to 4th generation (integrated fixed and mobile wireless networks)
communication.
This ambition has obtained comprehensive support and has led to the definition
of central research points in the Dutch knowledge institutions. This unique
collaboration concerns the entire knowledge chain and must lead to an
acceleration of public knowledge acquisition, transfer and utilisation. In order
to facilitate operations-focused R&D, the arrangement offers opportunities for
CIC-breakthrough projects. Through this approach the Netherlands will strengthen
its international position in this important research field.
The Freeband vision describes how, in the year 2010, consumers and companies
will have unrestricted access to information and communication by means of
unlimited bandwidth and far-reaching personalised ICT services. The intended
flexibility and simplicity of use require major adaptations in all system
layers, from the physical infrastructure to organisation models.
